Experiential empathy of disability

This immersive experience made along with the Diabetes Fund, taught people across the Netherlands what it feels like to live with Diabetes. Together with researchers, we designed interactions that triggered chemical reactions in the body similar to how a diabetes patient feels daily.

We recreated simulations of metabolic reactions such as physical balance, focus and even safely mimicked a hypoglycemic attack. Applying immersive learning principles, visitors on town squares would approach this experience thinking it was just an invitation to fun - which it was as well. But directly after the fun, a Dutch celebrity explained how the experience was similar to what a diabetic patient lives with on a daily basis.

This creation was also the world's first mobile modular escape room experience. Since then, hundreds of other businesses have created such experiences. This mobile awareness game traveled to cities and villages around the Netherlands for a year, changing the way the Dutch related to the 1/16th of the population in NL with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. This transitioned into projects that promoted healthier eating.
